01.25.17 - Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Most of us love the Jeep brand and the amazing lineup of SUVs it brings to the market. The Wrangler has been buoyed as one of the most beloved and actively used vehicles on the market in history and the Grand Cherokee is the nearly luxury SUV that some will choose over the luxury brand. For some time now, Jeep hasn’t had an answer for the higher priced and more luxurious Land Rover models, and that has been a sore spot for Jeep. That lack of competition is about to end with the models that will return to the market.

For years the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer have been gone from the market, but Jeep is poised to bring these two models back for the 2020 lineup to give those who would normally choose a Land Rover something they can love with the Jeep name on it. This is the direct market these two vehicles are aimed at and we can expect to see prototype and production models make their way to the auto show stages around the world over the next few years to give us a look at what these new Jeep models will look like.

The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are expected to come in at prices that will start out around $60,000 and head up to as much as $100,000. This is the segment these two massive SUVs will be working to take away from Land Rover as the Wagoneer looks to challenge the Range Rover Sport and the Grand Wagoneer, which will be the new flagship model from Jeep, will target the Range Rover. These two models should be built in the Warren, MI plant which is where the Ram trucks are built as they are expected to be built with a similar body on frame structure as the trucks.

In addition to the addition of these two names that certainly give us a blast from the past, the new Grand Cherokee is poised to be shown off and unveiled in 2019 to launch one year ahead of these two that will be positioned above it. This is good news as the popular SUV makes its move toward a modern look and feel to become a continued success on the SUV market that has only gotten bigger over the years.

Unfortunately there hasn’t been much word lately regarding what has been rumored to be the next Wrangler trim to be added. The rumor was that Jeep was working on a hybrid version of the Wrangler that would be badged as the Comanche, another highly popular throwback name, and nothing has surfaced yet regarding the brand coming out with such a vehicle at all. Will there be a Comanche and will it be a hybrid version of the Wrangler? That’s hard to say right now, but if Jeep is more focused on the top of their lineup, another new Wrangler just might have to wait until these others are launched before being considered.

It’s exciting to see Jeep bring back two of the names we’ve loved in the past that haven’t been part of the market for years. The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will certainly be fun to talk about for the next several years as Jeep develops them to be a direct head to head competition with the likes of the Land Rover models. The anticipation alone is killing me, and we haven’t even seen the first concept model of what either one of these models will be when they hit the road.
