Your car makes a lot of sounds and some of the higher end luxury models offer sound deadening items to help keep the noises from the road and your wheels from getting into the cabin. Unfortunately, most of the sound features don’t typically account for the fact that you might have squeaky brakes. Your brakes can squeak for a variety of reasons but the one nice thing is that it’s fairly easy to fix them and keep them from squeaking in the future, making your driving experience more of what you need it to be when you head out on the road.
Let’s make sure you understand one thing clearly; there is a difference between squeaky brakes and brakes that need to be replaced. Your brakes aren’t always going to be silent, but if they are working like they should and start to squeak, you need to think about what could be causing this problem. The noise you hear from your brakes is the sound that is controlled by the stiffness and mass of the pad and disc as they meet for the slowing and stopping of the vehicle you drive and enjoy.
Regular Noises
It’s normal for your brakes to have some noises for the first few stops you make in the morning until the pads warm up and drive off for the day. There can be a bit of rust that can accumulate overnight on the iron discs. If you head a screeching noise every time you brake, even on dry days and later in the day, you need to have your pads checked to see if they need to be replaced. This could be the wear indicator that’s scraping on the rotor as you brake, which is telling you that you need to change/replace your brakes.
One way to reduce the noise coming from your brakes, if you have plenty of pad material left, is to change the pads for a different material. A pad made of other materials can literally change the noise from your brakes and make it possible for you to no longer hear any noise. If this doesn’t work, you can also add shims that are made of Teflon to the calipers to add a bit of insulating material to the package to ensure your brakes are no longer making any noise when you drive on the road.
Another idea is to add a mass to the outside of the backing plate of the piston or caliper. This could move the noise outward and help reduce the sounds you hear from your brakes. If you choose to do this, you’re going to need to use a heavy-duty adhesive that’s made for this type of system to make sure you can keep the mass in place. There are several great ways to get rid of the squeaking of your brakes so that you can drive and enjoy the ride on the roads without the challenge of noises getting into the cabin that doesn’t need to be there.
