Are EV Trucks the Future?

Not only are EV trucks the future of driving, but they are also the present. These electric vehicles can give you power and capability.

If you’re looking for a great way to change from a gasoline truck to one that’s powered by electricity, some of the trucks we see for 2022 and beyond can get the job done for you. There will be more brands entering the fray in the next few years, but you should know where in the market most of these trucks are going to fit.

Ford and Chevy Models are Strong

The Ford Lighting will share the build with the F-150 to be a half-ton truck that has electric motors and the power needed to give you the drive and strength needed. When the 2024 model year arrives, the Chevrolet Silverado EV will be strong and capable as well, and it will bring the power needed to be a workhorse for you.

Even though these two trucks can be used to replace some of the half-ton variants, we don’t have a version of either that can replace the heavy-duty trucks just yet. For both of these models, the maximum towing rating is 11,000 pounds, which is perfectly in line with the half-ton versions of the F-150 and Silverado 1500 but does not give you the power to match the larger trucks.

While automakers work on more electric trucks to add to the mix, let’s take a look at some of the models you’ll see in the next few years.

Ford F-150 Lightning

We might as well start with one of the trucks we’ve already highlighted. The Lightning is ready to be on sale in the spring to give you the drive you want with electric motors. Among EV trucks, this Ford will bring you the right power and performance to get things done when you’re ready to put a truck to work.

The entry-level version of the Ford Lightning is the Pro model with pricier XLT, Lariat, and Platinum trims will be available as well. All models will have standard AWD with an electric motor at each axle. You’ll have the choice of either a 98.0-kWh or 131.0-kWh battery pack to give you the power needed for the drive. The smaller pack makes 426 horsepower and offers 230 miles of driving range, while the larger unit returns 563 horsepower and 300 miles of driving.

Chevrolet Silverado EV

The only thing you’ll find for this truck that looks anything like the gasoline-powered Silverado is the name. This truck will arrive for the 2024 model year, but it will look much more like the old Chevy Avalanche. You’ll find the Ultium battery pack for this truck to give you up to 400 miles of driving on a full charge. The first version offered will be the RST model, with the WT trim arriving a little later to be the truck that works great for fleet operators. Eventually, we’ll also see a Trail Boss version for excellent off-road fun.

GMC Sierra EV

Expect everything you find in the Chevy model to arrive with this GMC version of the Sierra. The build, power, and performance will match the GM sibling. Similar to what we find in the gasoline versions of these two trucks we should expect to find upscale qualities to make the cabin more posh and luxurious in the Sierra than what we see in the Silverado.

Tesla Cybertruck

The strange wedge shape and stainless-steel shell of the Cybertruck will make it to the market soon. This truck is made to be dentproof, scratchproof, and bulletproof(hopefully, you won’t need that last one). The power offered for this Tesla is expected to be greater than the Ford and GM models, but it might not be a truck that you want to take to the job site.

The Tesla Cybertruck is rated to tow up to 14,000 pounds and drive more than 500 miles on a single charge. This will be for the model that has three motors to power the wheels rather than the other versions that will only have one or two motors to turn the wheels. Will the Cybertruck be used for working at the job site, or will it be a truck made for play?

Rivian R1T

Rivian is quickly making a name for itself with a pair of new models and its latest stock offering that makes this new brand the next great electric vehicle brand. The R1T is going to be one of the most enticing EV trucks offered in the market.

This electric truck is going to give you a pair of battery packs that can give you 300 and 400 miles of driving range from a single charge. You’ll find more than 800 horsepower in this truck, and the tow rating that reaches 11,000 pounds for you to have the power you’re looking for.

GMC Hummer EV

Walk around in the outdoors like a crab with the GMC Hummer EV, which carries the name of a gas guzzler brand that has gone out of the market. The Hummer EV is amazing, exciting, and filled with cool items you’ll love when you head out on the desert trails for some fun.

What the Hummer EV gives you in fun and power on the trails, it lacks in practicality for being the next truck you take to the job site. Even so, among the EV trucks, this is probably the coolest one on the list.

Ram 1500 Electric

Finally, we get to talk about the last of the Detroit Big Three, adding an electric truck to the mix. This truck will arrive for the 2024 model year, at the same time as the Chevrolet Silverado EV. We should enjoy a truck that can drive up to 500 miles with a strong battery pack.

We don’t have a tow rating for this truck just yet, but we do know it will be built on the new Stellantis STLA electric platform. Where will this new Ram fit in amongst the other EV trucks?
