General Motors is looking to step up both its SUV lineup and its EV lineup, so a Camaro electric SUV could be in the works for 2026. If you’re asking why nothing is sacred here in the race to have the most EV models and SUV models, the reason is simply that SUVs dominate the landscape. Cars are becoming less and less popular.
Electrified Camaro SUV On the Way
Going to your Chevrolet dealer used to be a good opportunity to check out the brand’s famous muscle car badges, like the Camaro and the Corvette. But, in the near future, the Camaro you see just might be an electrified SUV instead of a muscle car. The Camaro just debuted in the Supercars Championship for the first time, but it’s on its way out.
General Motors has already announced its goal to launch 30 new EV models by 2025 and using the Camaro badge is a big part of this plan. Believe it or not, GM also plans to make an EV version of the Corvette, and yes, an SUV too. Using these iconic muscle car badges for SUV models probably seems blasphemous to enthusiasts, but unfortunately, there’s already a precedent. The Ford Mustang Mach-E’s success has shown that the market exists.
Camaro Sub-Brand
GM is working with the Ultium EV platform, which is highly modular and allows the automaker to tailor batteries and performance to many different models while using the same technology. For example, the Ultium platform will be used for both the GMC Hummer and the upcoming Corvette EV.
Details are still unconfirmed, but it appears that Chevrolet will turn the Camaro into its own sub-brand like the Corvette. This means that multiple models will be available in the near future. This might also mean that the Camaro SUV won’t be the only model under the sub-brand. A new sports coupe Camaro might also be in the works.
The idea behind launching two sub-brands is to create many models with different price points to appeal to a wide range of customers despite the similarities. Chevrolet hasn’t made any public comments about its plans for the Camaro nameplate, but it’s expected that the current V8 coupe will cease production by the end of 2024.
Price and Availability
The first Camaro EV model will likely be on sale somewhere between 2025 and 2026. It’s not known yet exactly what this will be, but industry experts think that it may be based on the recently-unveiled Chevrolet FNR-XE Concept, which is an electric four-door sedan. The Camaro EV sedan would then also replace the current Malibu sedan, becoming the new flagship car for the brand.
No word on any price range for the upcoming Camaro EV models, but for reference, the Ford Mustang Mach-E starts at $46,895 for the standard range version and tops out at $69,895 for the extended range.
2026 remains the expected goal for a new Camaro EV and/or SUV to appear at your local Chevrolet dealer.
