The Dodge Dart may not be first on your radar as a great compact sedan that will carry you on your commute on a regular basis, but the Dart certainly should be. This has become one of the best looking small sedans on the market and makes for a fun drive at a price that is highly affordable for anyone looking for their next commuter car. This car is actually and amazingly built on the platform that is offered by Alfa Romeo, but comes in as the car many should look at to be their next vehicle purchase.
Once inside the Dart you can find a larger navigation system and instrumentation that make it very easy to fully enjoy the fun of driving this car. The interior space is small, but it is a compact car so it’s hard to really argue about space that could not be built into the vehicle. The seats are comfortable and offer good support that might be better than some of the other low priced offerings found on the market in the compact car ranks. Overall, the Dart interior is easy to understand and makes for an immediate drive without having to learn where a bunch of confusing controls are located.
At the base model the engine is a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder Tigershark engine that is attached to a six-speed automatic transmission bringing in 160 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque. There is also a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder that offers a six-speed manual for more driving fun and the same horsepower but more torque at 184 lb.-ft. of torque with a better rpm number. What this really means is the turbo is a bit more powerful and dynamic for driving, but either one of these engines can give a great ride and the 160 horsepower is plenty to enjoy a fun ride in this little car.
The Dart does run several different models in order to ensure you can select the right model for you. If the base model doesn’t give you the excitement you are looking for there is the sport models to choose from such as the Si, GLI and ST that can give you better handling, sportier suspensions, and larger brakes make for a more engaged ride but you do have to keep in mind this is a compact sedan at its roots and one that on the lower end of the pricing spectrum which is not made to be pushed over the brink.
Even though you won’t be tearing up any sports cars in your Dodge Dart, the Dart is a highly attractive and confident ride on any road. It makes for one of the best commuter cars and should be put on many lists that seem to leave it off in favor of the Corolla or Mazda3.
