Should Mitsubishi Reenter the US Truck Market?

We see the Mitsubishi dealers around the country and we know they are struggling with the lineup that’s offered.

That lineup is getting stronger as the team adds the new Eclipse Cross to what we can drive but wouldn’t it be a good idea for this brand to get in on the midsize truck segment right now? With the growth we’re seeing in this segment, it seems that we’re going to have heavy competition in much the same way we did in the past and will have more choices for the drive we want to make.

What Makes Us Think of Mitsubishi and a Truck?

Recently, a teaser image surfaces of a redesigned Mitsubishi Triton/L200 pickup truck with a refreshed look. This style was introduced in 2014 but has finally made it to the market. With that in mind, are we going to have the benefit of adding another midsize truck to the market to give us yet another truck to drive? It doesn’t seem like it, and that’s certainly a terrible thing considering this truck is one that’s being offered in a number of areas around the world.

The Looks of the New Mitsubishi Triton

The photos offered to allow us to see that the nose of the truck has a new style which comes from the Outlander and the Eclipse Cross. This front design is called “Dynamic Shield” and it gives you a look that’s more pronounced up front. The Triton doesn’t change much anywhere else with the 2.4-liter gasoline engine and two diesel engine offerings that are used around the world. This truck also offers two 4WD systems to make it possible for those who need to have the capability the ability to drive and handle any challenges out on the road and trails.

Where is the Triton Sold

The Mitsubishi Triton is a global truck. This truck is already sold in 150 countries around the world from Europe to Africa. You can see this truck on the roads in Oceania, in the Middle East, and in Latin America. With the widespread use of this truck, you might think it would be a good choice to enter the North American market, but it’s not. The new version of the Triton will be built in Thailand and begin to be sold there as it makes its way around the globe to be sold where needed.

What’s Keeping the Mitsubishi Triton out of the US?

The first challenge for the team is the 25 percent tariff that would be applied to this truck which would automatically cause it to be a truck that would be priced out of the market. If this truck were to make it to the US, without the 25 percent tax, it would be in competition with the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier, and the new Ram that’s expected to be offered in the midsize truck market. It would certainly be interesting to see how this Mitsubishi could perform in the US.
