The 2024 Chevy Silverado ZR2 Goes Big in the 2500HD Lineup

You don’t only have to work hard with a three-quarter-ton truck; you can also play hard. The new 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500HD ZR2 takes things to a whole new level.

It’s possible to have big jobs that need to get done and still have a truck that’s a trail-riding monster. This new heavy-duty ZR2 comes with the off-road features required to make this pickup a lot of fun wherever you need to go. Are you ready to play in the dirt and take on some tricky trails? If so, this Chevy is the truck for you.

The ZR2 name continues upward

The first Chevy to wear the ZR2 name was the midsize Colorado. The success of this off-road-focused pickup allowed the bowtie brand to take things further and put the ZR2 equipment into the half-ton Silverado 1500. Now, we’ll see the fun-loving and hard-working version of this ZR2 in a much bigger size. In the 2500HD version, this truck comes with a crew-cab body and standard-size cargo bed. This is the right configuration to offer you the benefits of off-roading and plenty of power for the work you want to get done with this pickup.

How much power does this off-road heavy-duty truck offer?

All versions of the 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500HD ZR2 include a 4WD layout. This is pretty consistent for the ZR2 name, which is an off-roading signature for Chevy. The base powertrain for this big off-road is a 6.6-liter V8 engine that returns 401 horsepower and mates to an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain is capable of towing up to 16,000 pounds and carrying 3,400 pounds of payload.

There’s also an optional Duramax 6.6-liter turbocharged diesel V8 engine that generates 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain brings you 18,500 pounds of towing and 3,200 pounds of payload capacity.

What’s the off-road equipment for this heavy-duty Chevy?

The roster of exclusive equipment for this new off-road brute can make it even more fun to head out on the trails. This list includes 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory M/T tires, black 18-inch multispoke wheels, Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, and a heavy-duty Silverado ZR2 suspension which is lifted 1.5 inches compared to the standard suspension.

You’ll also enjoy the beefed-up control arms and new steering knuckle to give you a rugged feeling on the trail. As expected, a large aluminum front skid plate with steel protective plating protects the transfer case. The final element of this off-road package is an electronically locking rear differential that helps this big brute conquer the toughest off-road trails.

AEV already got their mitts on this truck

The team at American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) partnered with Chevy to create the ZR2 Bison models of the Colorado and Silverado 1500. Without skipping a beat, this team took to the 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500HD ZR2 and beefed it up with the Bison package.

This more hard-core off-road brute brings steel-stamped front and rear bumpers with recovery points and place for a winch, tougher skid plates, and a set of AEV-specific 18-inch wheels painted in gloss black. The AEV bumpers recuse the approach angle for this truck but improves the breakover angle from 22.6 degrees compared to 21.2 degrees. The ground clearance of the Bison model is 11.7 inches, and the packaging adds 380 pounds to this truck.

Forget the utilitarian cabin area of this heavy-duty truck

The Silverado 2500HD cabin is a serious upgrade compared to older models. The new ZR2 version brings a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and a 13.4-inch touchscreen and offers a surround-view camera system. You’ll also find a head-up display and a wireless charging pad, which is ideal for the wireless connectivity features offered in this hard-core off-roader.

When will the 2500HD ZR2 be available?

The new 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500HD ZR2 will enter production later this summer at the GM plant in Flint, Michigan. This timing allows this new heavy-duty off-roader to be readily available when the new model year begins in the fall. We don’t have official pricing for this truck yet, which will be offered as we get closer to the release date.

Will you go for the truck that plays in a big sandbox at work while heading out to some of the toughest trails at the end of the week? If so, you’ll want the ZR2 model of the Silverado 2500HD, which is the three-quarter-ton truck that can help you get the job done and enjoy some big fun.
