02.02.16 - 2015 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT

When you get to the higher levels of cars on the market you won’t find rivals that are really matched up as well as on the lower parts of the market. Even though this is the case we can always find a pair of willing participants to be compared against each other for us to look at, admire and find our favorites. When it comes to top level luxury sports cars that have some great power the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT and the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe are put up to the challenge of being compared with each other.

The first question with these two is to determine if these are really rival enough to be compared. The price of the Jaguar is about $30,000 less than the AMG which is a huge difference when looking at cars. It’s such a difference many of us would be able to buy our daily driver with the difference between these two cars. Does this mean we are comparing a sports car with one that has reach up to the exotic platform? Actually, no we aren’t there quite yet with the AMG, but you can see where this conversation is headed.

Under the hood we see the Hag has a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine that makes 550 horsepower and 502 lb.-ft. of torque while the Benz offers a twin-turbocharged V8 that comes in with 503 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. of torque. With these power numbers you might expect the Jag would win for top speed, but in reality the AMG will reach 193 mph while the F-Type can reach up as high as 186 mph. If top speed was all we cared about this comparison would be over, but there is much more to these two than just the speed that is reached.

Exterior Style

When you look to the outside of these two cars you might wonder why the AMG appears to be cut off in the back. The F-Type looks longer and sportier from front to back, but the AMG offers a much more expensive and exotic paint job to show up at a higher part of the luxury market. The Jag gives you attractive yellow brake calipers which add to the sportiness of the car while the Benz offers chrome accents that add to the overall elegance of the car. The sport look is improved even more on the F-Type with the carbon fiber roof that looks mean and ready to roll.

Interior Looks

The interior comparison is really not a fair fight at all. The Benz put the $30,000 difference to this area of the car. With red leather added to the seats and dashboard, plenty of chrome and aluminum and higher quality materials and systems all around you can see why this car costs so much more. The only drawback to this high grade interior is the fact that the designers moved things to where you aren’t used to seeing them such as the selector knob in the center console toward the rear and the start button in the middle of the console. While this car has the seat controls on the seat, where most automatic seats are, reaching these controls can be difficult.

Inside the Jaguar you will feel left out of the party when you put these tow side by side. The overall color is the same throughout the car but the Alcantara leather is an excellent to sit in and the controls are all in the right place. The word to describe the interior of this car is “livable” which makes it a car that you can step inside and take a drive. Another benefit of this car is the driving position which gives better visibility and a higher seating position.

The Drive

Get behind the wheel of the AMG and you will enjoy a car that feels extremely exotic and perfect from the start. This car shows up with more control and a planted feeling that lets you enjoy every move you will make in this car. The Benz reaches its top power sooner than the Jag and acceleration is excellent on this car to give you the best driving for carving up a road and enjoying the overall drive.

Inside the Jaguar the drive is exciting and active. This car feels much more like a sports car you want to toss around and let out the angry beast that hides under the hood. Although there is AWD present on the Jag you will feel some rear end movement when tossing it around the curves. The two transmissions give you a different feel, but overall this only has to do with the tuning of each engine and is basically a nonexistent feeling or difference to deal with. As you can plainly see, the drive is different for the two and you have to make a real choice between these two.

Sound

With these two the sound of the engine makes quite a huge difference in which car you want to drive. The Benz gives you a low and mean growl that is continuous throughout the acceleration giving you a luxury feeling that is more akin to the exotics that are much higher in price. The Jaguar on the other hand has a loud and strong sound that makes it feel more like a rude and raucous hooligan that would be more at home in a pack of Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Which car is the clear winner? The Mercedes-Benz AMG Gt is able to reach sixty mph faster and has a higher top speed. The interior is clearly much better and more luxurious, but this comes at a price difference of nearly $30,000. The Jaguar F-Type R Coupe offers more power, easier livability, a lower price and an angrier sound from the engine. Overall, unless you have to own the interior of the Benz, the clear winner for this contest is the Jag which comes in with more for the money, letting you enjoy it on the weekends while you use the difference for your daily driver.
