The past two SEMA shows have been the hotbeds for Mazda to show off some of what it can do to create the impressive performance that’s needed when you have one of the most fun cars to drive with the low power numbers of the Mazda MX-5 Miata. For the Miata to continue to be the fun car you want to drive, there has to be some variations that could make you want to get behind the wheel and see what each one of the different Miata models can do and how the changes made help to create the improved performance that we want to enjoy.
In 2015 Mazda showed up at SEMA with the speedster concept which was a lightweight version of the Global Cup race car. This car was later evolved for the 2016 SEMA show and brought back, making it a car that came to two shows in a row and gave us a great look at what it can be as it just might make it to the market in the future. This is certainly an exciting idea and one that continues to develop for Mazda to eventually be something seriously impressive.
The most recent MX-5 Speedster concept that came to SEMA was bathed in White Ether paint to make it stand out as one of the most gloriously beautiful concepts at the show. While the original car that was brought to the 2015 show had already lost some weight, the model that made the trip for 2016 is reduced to a lightweight number of only 1,980 pounds which is nearly 350 pounds lighter than a stock MX-5 Miata. This was achieved by removing the roof and changing out some components for lighter ones to make this a car that could easily be fun on the road or track with its lightweight build.
Another of the versions that we enjoyed at the 2016 show was the MX-5 Miata RF Kuro concept. The word Kuro means “charcoal” in Japanese and is the one used by Mazda to mean the dark gray nearly matte finish that’s put on the concept RF model that came to the show to capture our attention and give us a great look at what we can expect from this car. The look was absolutely breathtaking and it did more than just capture our attention as I’m sure some who were in attendance were trying to plot an escape with this car.
The Kuro came in with more than just a great looking new paint job; this car was fitted with 17-inh forged RAYS wheels and offered an adjustable suspension setup that came from the MX-5 Global Cup car. As you can plainly see, the Global Cup car has been a serious source of inspiration for the cars that Mazda brought to SEMA to be some of the most impressive that we’ve ever seen.
