Typically a vehicle that’s been upgraded only three years prior won’t receive across the board upgrades in the middle of the generational run. BMW decided to dispel these “normalities” and make the changes that we would enjoy anyway. This means the BMW 4 Series receive new engines across the lineup that are lighter and more powerful than before. Along with these new engines the 4 Series adds new names to the lineup to give us the right way to see how these new models perform and at what level, making this a sport luxury car that we’ll continue to love and admire.
The new nomenclature of the 4 Series brings us the 4 Series coupes, convertibles and four-door Gran Coupe that make the lineup one of versatility to give you exactly what you want. This is a car that you’ll love for the driving dynamics that are found in the lauded 3 Series but in a sleeker form. While the typical 4 Series is a two-door coupe, the four-door coupe is an attractive and elegant definition of what this car can be with its spacious hatch area and exceptionally attractive lines.
Since we’ve already said there’s new engines under the hood, let’s take a look at what these engines are. For the 430i, which is now the base model, you have a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is capable of producing 248 horsepower and 253 lb.-ft. of torque. This is more than enough power for this lightweight luxury sports car. This engine is attached to either an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission with the manual being offered on the coupes as an option. AWD is also an option you can choose to enjoy on this car and have the benefit of the added control that you want.
Moving up to the 440i the engine has been improved to be a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that gives you the punch of 320 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine uses the same transmissions as the smaller one for the 430i. At the top of the lineup the M4 makes use of the same size six-cylinder engine but pushed the power up to 425 ponies and 406 lb.-ft. of twist. This engine is mated to either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission to give you the energetic shifting you need in a powerful sports coupe.
The transition for coupes to move from soft tops for the convertible models to hardtops continues to be an impressive movement for many vehicles. The BMW 4 Series is no different in this aspect. The power folding hard top gives this car a classic look and feel in order to give you the ride you want to enjoy. Top disappears from view and leaves you with a car that feels and drives with the fun you and three others will enjoy on the open road when the sun is out and the road is open to you.
As a BMW you expect this car to have tons of great items for you to enjoy on the road. In addition to the expected standard items that you’ll find on the 4 Series you’ll love the upgraded sixteen-speaker Harmon/Kardon sound system, the hands free trunk system that’s activated with your foot, actual leather upholstery that is smooth and comfortable, a Technology Package which brings you a navigation system and dedicated apps, a Driver Assistance which adds the blind spot monitoring, Active Driving Assistant, lane departure warning, collision mitigation, automatic braking and pedestrian detection. The M4 models upgrade the performance aspects with carbon-ceramic braes and the driver selectable Adaptive M Suspension system.
There no getting around the impressive way BMW has improved the 4 Series. This lineup is now the benefit of two excellent engine improvements and the movement toward a four-door coupe that you can love and have easier access to the rear seats. This is a sleek and stylish vehicle that’s easy to drive and enjoy on the road that you might consider taking to the track just to see what it can do, especially if you choose the M4. Let the BMW 4 Series show you what it’s capable of and how much fun you’ll have driving this beauty.
